Jongmyo is a Confucian royal shrine that has been maintained intact to this day, and is rare in the world. Intangible cultural heritage, such as the Jongmyo Jerye rite and Jongmyo Jeryeak, has been passed down through the 500-year history of the Joseon Dynasty to the present. In recognition of these values, Jongmyo Shrine was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, and Jongmyo Jerye and Jongmyo Jeryeak were listed as UNESCO Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001.
